French Press Brewing Guide

The French press is the most forgiving brew method out there. If you want a full-bodied, rich cup without fussing over technique, this is your go-to.

What You’ll Need

  • A French press (any size)
  • A kettle
  • Coarsely ground coffee
  • A timer

The Recipe

We use a 1:15 ratio — 30g of coffee to 450g of water for a standard press.

  1. Heat water to 200°F (94°C)
  2. Grind coffee coarsely (like sea salt)
  3. Add coffee to the press
  4. Pour water and start your timer
  5. Wait 4 minutes — don’t touch it
  6. Press slowly — steady, even pressure
  7. Pour immediately to stop extraction

Tips

  • Don’t let it sit — coffee left in the press keeps extracting and gets bitter
  • Coarse grind is critical — too fine and you’ll get sludge and over-extraction
  • Dark roasts shine here — the full immersion brings out chocolate and nutty notes
